How to read this
Wake windows are a rule of thumb from sleep coaching, not a tested method. Treat the range as a starting point and watch your baby: yawning, staring off and rubbing eyes are better signals than the clock.
The sleep totals are different. They come from a 2012 review of 34 studies of how much healthy babies actually sleep. The spread is wide, and a baby near either end can be perfectly normal.

Wake windows and nap counts: common sleep-coaching ranges, not measured in a study. Galland et al. found an average of 3.1 naps a day up to five months, 2.2 at six to eleven months and 1.2 at one to two years. Total sleep: Galland et al. 2012. Recommendations: National Sleep Foundation (0–3 months) and American Academy of Sleep Medicine (4–24 months).
Why is this only a rule of thumb? Read what the research says about wake windows, or turn the range into a day plan with the nap schedule maker.
